Popular Mats For Training At Home

In this hopefully soon post covid world people will probably continue to train at home. Sure they will resume their gym training at some point if they haven’t already but the urge to train at home will remain. Which is why they will continue to require mats for their home training. Here we discuss popular mats for training at home.

Firstly to say that this mat is more popular that that mat and vice vera is pointless. All mats are great for training and the main factor is to have a training mat in the first place. You need to protect yourself during training for your long term benefit. It is good to know, however, what is available and what is out there. A good place to start is EVA mats.

Popular Mats

EVA Mats A Flexible Mats

EVA Mats are a mat which is made from EVA material. There are many things made with EVA. It is an inexpensive material and it has good protective qualities which is why it is so useful. It is particularly useful for training which is why EVA mats exist. A popular form they come in is puzzle mats, where you can set up large areas in your home or gym.

Other mats made from EVA are yoga mats. So they are a single mat which you roll out onto a timber or concrete floor. They are portable and usually light weight depending on the thickness. This type of EVA mats is popular not only for yoga but also for pilates and other physical activities.

Heading to The Gym With Gym Mats

Gym mats are any kind of mat which you would use during gym training. They come in all shapes and sizes and use different types of materials. The term Gym Mats is a very broad term which is used to describe any mat you might use for your training. Gym mats would include everything from yoga mats to crash mats and tatami mats.

Which brings us to Jigsaw Mats which are also great mats. It can be argued that jigsaw mats are indeed the most popular mats for home training. Indeed they are our highest selling mats. If I had to nominate a gym mats which outsells all others it would definitely be jigsaw mats. They are inexpensive and you can cover a large area in no time. I guess their convenience and cost is what make jigsaw mats such an interesting proposition.

Will Jon Jones Train on MMA Mats or Jigsaw Mats for UFC 239

It has been confirmed that UFC legend Jon Jones will be officially licensed Wednesday to compete at UFC 239 by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC). Jones, who has been fighting to clear his name of doping questions, will defend the UFC light heavyweight title against Thiago Santos in the main event of the July 6 card in Las Vegas USA. In naming Thiago as Jones’ apparent it is clear that the UFC is looking to create a super competitive fight.

Jigsaw Mats versus MMA Mats

The greater question is what kind of mats will Jon Jones use in preparation for this great fight. Will it be MMA mats or will it be jigsaw mats?  Although there is no real way for us to know unless we actually go to the gym where Jon Jones trains to check out the mats let just try to imagine which would be best.

The MMA mats are a more durable mat and one would assume that both Jon Jones and his training partners train a lot. Logically if they train so much then there would be a lot of wear and tear occurring on the MMA mats or what ever type of mats they were training on. Therefore a more durable mats such as a MMA mat or even judo mat would seem the best option.

Martial Arts Clubs and MMA Centres

On the other hand jigsaw mats have been a mainstay for martial arts clubs including MMA training centres for years now. That said it could be easily concluded that the gym where Jon Jones trains could likely be using jigsaw mats or EVA mats. I mean these training centres tend to be huge and using jigsaw mats to deck them out would seem to be a great option.

The other possibility is that they use a combination of both. I have seen this before and indeed many of our customers do combine jigsaw mats and MMA mats in there gyms to cut down on costs whilst still maintaining a professional look and feel in their gyms.

Why EVA Mats For Martial Arts?

Customers always ask me why EVA mats are so good for martial arts training. It is a good question as martial arts mats are in high demand  now, especially since MMA and BBJ has taken off in the past years. There is a number of answers to this question which I will explore in further details below.

EVA mats are a puzzle mats which is made from expandable foam. The main feature of EVA is that is has absorbing qualities which make it idea as an anti-fatigue mats. EVA can come in a variety of thicknesses depending on the application. It is ideally used to make mats but it can also be used for other applications in both sports and industry. EVA can be dyed into any colour and can even have multiple colours such as our jigsaw mats.

EVA mats are also light weight. As they are made from expandable foam there is no need for any other  material to be used in combination which the mats. They don’t need an additional protective coating as they are easy to clean and are very durable. It is there very durability that makes them so appealing. We have supplied these to all sorts of organisations such as police tactical response training who put them through vigorous work outs in a daily basis.

Lastly EVA mats are cheap. They are the most inexpensive anti-fatigue  mats you are likely to find. As EVA is just an petroleum bi-product it is a material which is in abundance and is easy to obtain. The inexpensive quality of these mats makes them the ideal product for any organisation that needs to stick to a budget.

EVA Interlocking Jigsaw mats

EVA interlocking jigsaw mats such as those sold by Southern Cross Mats are a form or safety flooring commonly used by a variety of martial arts. They are also popular with other physical activities that require safety flooring.

They are used to minimise the impact of falling during training. All martial arts have training methods which from time to time necessitate falling to the floor. In MMA where there is combination of martial arts including judo and wrestling students can be expected to throw one another on to the mats. Jigsaw mats are an excellent way to mitigate the effects of being thrown or falling. Also where there is grappling or rolling on the flour jigsaw mats help create a clean even surface for training to take place.

What is EVA mat made from?

EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate) is one of the materials popularly known as expanded rubber or foam rubber. It is used as padding in equipment for various sports such as ski boots, bicycle saddles, hockey pads, boxing and mixed martial arts gloves and helmets, wakeboard boots, waterski boots, fishing rods and fishing reel handles. They are typically used as a shock absorber in sports shoes, for example. It is used for the manufacture of floats for commercial fishing gear such as purse seine (seine fishing) and gillnets. In addition, because of its buoyancy, EVA has made its way into non-traditional products such as floating eyewear.

There are also uses in the photovoltaics industry as an encapsulation material for silicon cells in the manufacture of photovoltaic modules. Even EVA slippers and sandals are currently very popular because of their properties like light weight, easy to mould, odourless, glossy finish, and cheaper compared to natural rubber. In fishing rods, it is used to construct handles on the rod-butt end. It is also a fact that EVA can be used as a substitute for cork in many applications.

EVA is used in the manufacture of the Adidas Jabulani football and Native shoes. It is used in orthotics, fire safe cigarettes (FSC), surfboard and skimboard traction pads, and for the manufacturing of some artificial flowers. EVA can easily be cut from sheets and molded to shape. It is also used to make thermoplastic mouthguards that soften in boiling water for a user specific fit. It is also used for impregnation of leather.

Additional uses are in the making of nicotine transdermal patches since the copolymer binds well with other agents to form gel like substances. Strangely EVA is also sometimes used for making body bags. So EVA is a multi-purpose product used in a number of products not just jigsaw mats.

What are Interlocking Jigsaw mats?

The jigsaw mats is modelled on the same concept of jigsaw puzzle mats. A jigsaw puzzle is a tiling puzzle that requires the assembly of numerous small, often oddly shaped, interlocking and tessellating pieces. Each piece usually has a small part of a picture on it; when complete, a jigsaw puzzle produces a complete picture. In some cases more advanced types have appeared on the market, such as spherical jigsaws and puzzles showing optical illusions.

Jigsaw mats are available in a number of different thicknesses. The activity usually determines what thickness is used. The higher the impact the thicker the mat. So for example activities such as judo will user a thicker jigsaw mat then say aerobics. Both activities require jigsaw mats to minimise effects on the body and joints.

20mm – 40mm Jigsaw Mats

EVA jigsaw mats are available in a variety of sizes from 20mm to 40mm. The thickness of the mats depends on the use of the mats and it is up to the user to determine what thickness is required. 40mm Jigsaw Mats are more suited for falling martial arts including Judo, Jiu Jitsu and Aikido as they offer more protection. Constant throwing and grappling can often lead to injury if adequate padding is not available during impact. Also other aspects of training like rolling and break-falls require protection. Therefore, the thicker the mat the better the protection. The 40mm jigsaw mats also offer excellent value for money because they offer more protection then mats which are half as thick yet not half the price. For this reason they are a more popular choice of jigsaw mats.
